Yet another Mexican dies in ICE custody
Emiliano Andrade-Covarrubias, a 56-year-old Mexican national, died in his cell at an ICE detention center in Laredo, Texas.
Mexico's Foreign Ministry (SRE) has asked US authorities for a prompt, thorough and transparent investigation.
The SRE says 18 Mexicans have now died in US immigration custody or during immigration operations since January 2025.
Mexico plans to file a complaint with local prosecutors and will press for consular access to detention centers.
Mexico's Foreign Ministry (SRE) has asked the United States to investigate the death of a Mexican man held in a US immigration detention center in Texas.
The SRE said US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) told it on Sunday that Emiliano Andrade-Covarrubias, 56, had died in his cell at the Rio Grande Processing Center in Laredo, according to an AP report published by Proceso. ICE has not made the cause of death public.
The ministry asked US authorities for a prompt, thorough and transparent investigation to establish what happened and who, if anyone, is responsible. It said it will file a complaint with the Webb County prosecutor's office. Through the Mexican Embassy in Washington, it will also ask that Mexican consuls be given access to detention centers and that detainees receive proper medical care. The Mexican consulate in Laredo has contacted the man's family and is providing them with assistance.
The SRE said 18 Mexican nationals have now died in US immigration custody or during immigration enforcement operations since Jan. 20, 2025, the day President Donald Trump began his second term. Several Mexican outlets, including ABC Noticias and Expreso, reported the same figure. The ministry said it has sent diplomatic notes to the US State Department about these cases and is helping families find legal representation.
